Anderson offers workshops at various locations around the country. He
received his artistic education in the traditional atelier or studio system of
training under Minneapolis artist Richard Lack. This makes him part of a
master-pupil lineage that can be traced back to 19th century masters
such as Jacques Louis David.
Through demonstrations and personal critiques Anderson will help you
to energize your paintings with a classic, rock-solid approach to color,
brushwork and design. His instruction is grounded in the classic atelier
method, which emphasizes building skill upon skill. He will share his
secrets from his long study of the old masters and the impressionists to
help you reach a new level in your own personal style of painting.
Still Life/Floral Painting
You will be immersed in the challenge of color observation and color
mixing - in finding just the right note to make your flowers come alive.
Emphasis will also be placed on paint handling and the use of impasto
techniques - applying thick touches of paint to create depth of field.
Portrait Drawing and Painting and Figure Drawing and Painting
You will learn to capture "the big look," the broad masses of light and
dark that express the shapes you are seeing. Anderson will help you
analyze those shapes in terms of gesture, expression and anatomy,
keeping your focus on the qualities that so subtly express what is
essential to the human form.
Landscape Painting
You will receive instruction in dynamic alla prima (literally 'all at once')
painting with the goal of capturing your immediate impression of a scene
during a particular time of day. Emphasis wil be placed on achieving the
broad visual impression and rich, naturalistic color.
